THE PRODUCTION OF CELLULOSE AND PAPER FROM BAST CROPS FIBER

In global pulp-and-paper industry main raw material for the production of paper and board is the cellulose from wood. However, for countries which have not enough  own reserves the urgency of producing fibrous semi-finished products from non-wood plant raw materials particularly from straw of bast crops increases. Processing of straw stalks of oil flax in order to obtain cellulose-containing semi-finished products for various purposes will allow reducing the import dependence of Ukraine in the process of manufacturing  strategically important products and will ensure the protection of environment to overwhelms.

OBJECTIVE

The main objective is to develop the technology for deep processing  straw stalks of bast crops, directed to obtaining cellulose-containing semi-finished products for domestic pulp-and-paper industry

TECHNOLOGICAL SCHEME OF PRODUCTION

RESULTS

Cellulose-containing semi-finished products received by the proposed technology are characterized by the high content of cellulose component – 92,53-98,54% and low content of lignin – 0,56-0,81 %, and pectin substances are in the residue. Thus, the fiber of oil flax can be used for cellulose production both due to significant raw reserves and annual recoverability and its technological characteristics and consumer properties that industrial tests confirmed.

Filter paper

The analysis of the quality of the received paper is clearly resulted that its air-retention capacity equals to 600-700 units, while the same index for the paper of pine-needles cellulose  is only 70 units. The performed tests showed that the cellulose-containing semi-finished products of oil flax have necessary paper-forming properties, and their use allows receiving high-quality  paper.

It is worth mentioning that technology of manufacturing  filter paper using fiber of oil flax does not require increasing or reconstruction of existing technical base of production.

COMPARISON WITH WORLD  ANALOGUES

The advantages of the proposed technology over foreign and domestic analogues are:
•existence of cheap cellulose-containing raw material from bast crops in Ukraine;
•practical absence of industrial production of cellulose from annual plants for  paper production in the world;
•cost of cellulose produced from industrial hemp and oil flax  is twice as lower as the  cost of imported cellulose;
•high quality indicators of  cellulose produced from bast crops.

ECONOMIC ATTRACTIVENESS

Economic efficiency of usage of bast crops fibers for obtaining cellulose materials has great importance. Conducted researches have shown that cellulose yield from the fibre of oil flax exceeds 80 %. The cost of cellulose raw material received by the developed technology considering cultivating, processing of straw stalks of oil flax and wet processing of fiber is 2-3 times as low as the cost of cellulose imported from abroad.

SPHERE OF APPLICATION

Cellulose received from the bast crops fibers has wide range of applications and can be used for manufacturing  paper, board and various products from them.

RESULTS OF IMPLEMENTATION

Industrial tests which confirmed the efficiency of conducted scientific researches were performed at LLC “Tsiurupynsk paper mill”, Tsiurupynsk, Kherson region (the act of industrial tests № 3 dated from 17.05.2009 ).
